Shem was born and raised in western Kenya. He has been practicing theatre since 2004 when he first performed in a play that won at the Kenya National Drama festival, not forgetting a number of accolades he won with his high school Drama outfit.
He joined the professional theatre scene in 2009 starring in a Kiswahili novel theatre adaptation Utengano and An Enemy Of The People – Swahili and literature books that were studied by O – Level students in Kenya at the moment. This was under Theatric Arts Ensemble. Later he joined Jicho Four Productions before he was fished into the professional theatre scene by his mentor and director Mr. Jacob Otieno.
Shem joined Festival of Creative Arts (FCA) where he played the role of the stage manager in Alan Aykbourn's Absent Friends! In the subsequent production he was cast in the musical, Christmas in Nairobi by the same production.
He has also starred in a number of plays by The Friends Ensemble, another professional commercial theatre outfit. In Seymour Matthews' Dead Man's Hand, he played the lead character David while in Marc Camoletti's Don't Dress for Dinner he played the character George.
Shem is a television actor and screenplay writer as well. He has acted in different capacities in television dramas such as Tahidi High (Citizen TV), Nairobi Law (Citizen TV), SIRI (Citizen TV), HILA (KBC) and Angel's Diary (KBC). He is the lead writer for Mela's House (KBC) which is actually his brain child.
Shem has also written and directed plays amongst them Skeletons in the Closet which won in the Best Comedy category at the 2010 Kenya National Schools, Colleges and Universities Drama Festivals held in Kisumu and Let's Play Naked which was performed at the Kenya National Museum auditorium by Ufanisi Productions Theatre.
Currently he is a teacher of Drama at Oshwal Academy Nairobi Junior High and the Executive Director at IRIN MEDIA AFRICA LIMITED (www.irinmediaafrica.com), a media outfit which also incorporates theatre and video productions.
Shem is also a television actor having starred in a number of productions in all the major television stations in Kenya. In addition he is a motivational speaker and a professional blogger on serious issues that affect the society (www.shemagunga.com).
Last but not least Shem is also an established events emcee for institutions and corporates, an ardent debater and an independent television producer.
