One of the great African filmmakers, Cheick Oumar SISSOKO is a director and politician from Mali. He has a DEA in African History and Sociology, as well as a Diploma in History and Cinema from Ecole des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales with his further studies in cinema done at Ecole Nationale Louis Lumière. He is the winner of two Etalon de Yennenga awards at FESPACO, the first for GUIMBA (1995) and the other for LA GENESE (1999) while his adaptation of the Aminata Sow Fall's BATTU won him the RFI prize at the same festival in 2001. In 1996, he founded a political party, African Solidarity for Democracy and Independence, along with Oumar Mariko. He became the Malian Minister of Culture in 2002 and remained in this position until late 2007.
