Literacy is defined as the ability to read and write or knowledge in a specified area. Statistics show that some 775 million adults lack minimum literacy skills; one in five adults is still not literate and two-thirds of them are women; 60.7 million children are out-of-school and many more attend irregularly or drop out. Countries with the lowest literacy rates in the world are Burkina Faso (12.8%), Niger (14.4%) and Mali (19%). The report shows a clear connection between illiteracy and countries in severe poverty, and between illiteracy and prejudice against women.

Literacy is a human right and the basis for lifelong learning. It empowers individuals, families and communities and improves their quality of life. Because of its "multiplier effect", literacy helps eradicate poverty, reduce child mortality, curb population growth, achieve gender equality and ensure sustainable development, peace and democracy.

But on the other hand, why is the world facing so many problems with all these literate people? Should literacy simply end at the ability to read and write? Perhaps it's the question of values. What is the role of values in literacy, and do they matter?

This Saturday on Fatuma's Voice, we welcome the Arterial Network to come help us discuss this ahead of the International Literacy Day scheduled to be marked on September 8th. We have amazing poetry from the likes of Asha Jaffar and Ut as well as music from Acouslyk and Joharee Band. So much more awaits us on the evening. See you.
